It starts with setting up a wallet app to buy cryptocurrency using money from your regular bank account. Cryptocurrency "wallets" such as those offered by Coinbase, Gemini, CashApp, and Venmo give you the ability to purchase cryptocurrency. Once you have that, paying me becomes easy and private.
While you can pay me with most kinds of cryptocurrencies, my preferred method of payment is a currency called Zcash, which is a special kind of crypto called a “privacy coin.”
Unlike Bitcoin, Zcash can "shield" payments, making them unobservable. Other cryptocurrencies, including the famous ones like Bitcoin, work more like Venmo: every transaction is listed publicly for all to see. Zcash, however, is a payment system that uses encryption to make payments truly private.
The safest way to send and receive Zcash is by using a dedicated app called the Zodl Wallet. However, you still need to convert your existing money into cryptocurrency on an exchange such as Coinbase, Gemini, CashApp, or Venmo first. That's why you need 2 apps to pay me in Zcash directly, or a crypto-capable app to pay me in whatever cryptocurrency the app actually supports.
If you already have Coinbase, Gemini, CashApp, or Venmo, you can pay me in Bitcoin without needing an extra app. However, the better way to pay me is to set yourself up with Zcash directly so that you can make payments private all by yourself regardless of who you're paying or what you're paying for.
To pay me in Zcash directly:
1. First, use whatever existing app you have (Coinbase, Gemini, CashApp, or Venmo) to buy some crypto. It doesn't really matter what crypto you choose. Just make sure it's cryptocurrency and not simply a cash balance in your government's local currency.
2. Next, download and install the Zodl Zcash Wallet app from the App Store or Play Store.
3. Use the Zodl app's "Swap" feature to convert the cryptocurrency you bought in Coinbase, Gemini, CashApp, or Venmo into shielded Zcash and send it to your Zodl app.
4. Finally, email me for my Zodl wallet address to send me a payment direct from your own Zodl wallet.

*Please note: If you're new to this, I am happy for you to send me a few dollars worth of Zcash to my Zodl wallet before you send the full larger amount to confirm you are doing the payment correctly. Once I confirm that I have received this small amount, you can then send the rest of the payment to me knowing you did it right and I will receive it safely.
